Is the Simplest Forum the right forum for you? |

I get forum and email questions all of the time from folks wishing that Simplest Forum did this or that. Some ideas are great ideas and end up turning into plugins - that's how the RSS plugin came about for instance. Many of the ideas, though, are not really suited for the Simplest Forum, in my opinion. This little brain child was intended from the start to be the most minimal, open source, Joomla! 1.5 forum available so that any novice should be able to set it up, get it running or use it...but is the Simplest Forum the right forum for you?

Anyone using the Simplest Forum Notification Plugin should update as soon as possible. There was a bug in the 1.0.1 release which does not allow the messages to be sent to administrators unless they are explicitly subscribed to a thread. The newest version 1.0.2 corrects this issue.
ALSO:: This and all future Simplest Forum releases will not be compatible with PHP4. With PHP6 on the horizon and a strong and stable PHP5 well out and in the world, I suggest that anyone still using PHP4 upgrade to the newest stable release.

RSS Plugin Now Available! |

I finally found a little time to put together an RSS plugin for the Simplest Forum. It is now available from the downloads section. It allows two levels of subscriptions: users can subscribe to an entire forum or to a specific topic. The level of subscription is determined by the view that the user subscribes from. For example, if the user is on the list of topics, subscribing to the feed will subscribe them to the entire forum. If instead the user is on the post list view or topic detail view the subscription will be for the selected thread.

Occasionally I like to Google the Simplest Forum and see if there are any new blogs, write-ups, comparisons, etc. I've recently discovered a handful of write-ups where Simplest Forum is compared to other forums such as Agora and Kunena. More exciting, though, is that I've found what I believe to be the first handful of third party plugins for the Simplest Forum.

Simplest Forum 1.5.0 Released |

Simplest Forum 1.5.0 was released this morning along with a file attachment / upload plugin (simplestforumupload). Version 1.5.0 makes some under the hood changes to how posts are stored and makes a few bug fixes. I'd like to thank Andrew Forsberg for his helpful work on the upload plugin! I'd also like to thank Ewout Wierda for his continued ideas and suggestions!
There are both a fresh install component for 1.5.0 as well as a 1.4.2 to 1.5.0 upgrade package, so please make sure you use the correct one.
The SF is also still lacking any great documentation, so if you'd like to write up some documentation and contribute it would be much appreciated. Also, anyone willing and able to design a new look and feel would be my hero. Thanks all!
